There’s nothing like serving in an inner city community to reveal how frail and beautiful and mysterious the life of faith is. Or just life in general. Watching my friends rise and fall on the waves of addictions, mental illness, success and failure, growing and deteriorating relationships, poverty and plenty... It is especially revealing when the people you see “lurching along” in their faith journey are more humble, more dedicated, more thoughtful, more honest, more determined--just more--than anything I’ve experienced. It’s good for the soul to see this, to live among this. It is a clear reminder that our faith, our ministry, our very breath this day is entirely dependent on God’s grace and the grace of others. This song is a nod to humility--to honesty. I would follow--if you please, Lord. I don’t know how faith grows in the dark and unseen moments of life, any more than I know how or when a seed is unfolding in dark soil. If you please, Lord, I will follow today.
lyrics
Sometimes it’s just so hard to feel the touch of life
In this desert of the real
Sometimes it’s just so hard to see the vision
that should lead me
Sometimes it’s just so hard to hear the word
that should be spoke
What does it mean to walk by faith and not by sight?
There must be more to this riddle
How does the planted seed develop in the ground?
So much more than eyes can see
How am I present with the Lord in this old tent
That’s breaking me?
I would follow if you please
I would follow if you please
I would follow if you please
I would follow
