about

It’s so important that religious figures throw off the pretence of moral perfection--that teflon skin that reinforces some sense of moral superiority while keeping people from really touching us. Somehow we seem to fall over and over into this short-cut, this pretension--often, we rationalize, “for the sake of the people.” It’s true that religious leaders need to set examples and be beyond reproach--which makes us feel all the more keenly just how unworthy we are, and how often we fail in exactly that. The pastors I know, some of whom have spent years developing a deep and authentic spiritual life, really are finite and flawed human beings who are truly saved by grace. God knows that I am only in a place of spiritual leadership because of his mysterious working in my life, and that it’s only to the degree that I am honest and vulnerable with my human frailty that I can be of any use to the people I am serving. We are all lurching along on this journey--from stumble to stumble, and, God willing, from strength to strength. Much of my life has been driven by the wind... futile, distracted, sometimes swirling crazily, sometimes soaring to great heights... But it’s meaningless. I wonder, could the Spirit, the ruach or wind/breath of God, regather me, untangle me, move me in right directions. This is the only ground I can stand on.

lyrics

Don’t ask me
Don’t ask me to do anything at all
Don’t ask me to be
Don’t ask me to be anything for you
Anything
Anything
I’m just a drifter in the wind
I’m just a driven thing
And I don’t know how I came to be here
I’m just a drifter in the wind
I’m just a driven piece of shit
I’m just a drifter
And I don’t know how I came to be here
I’m just a drifter in the wind
I’m just a driven man
And I don’t know how I came to be here

Don’t ask me
Don’t ask me to do anything at all
You know I’d only fall
Don’t ask me to be
Don’t ask me to be anything for you
‘Cause I’d do anything
Anything
‘Cause I’m just a drifter in the wind
I’m just a driven thing
And I don’t know how I came to be here
I’m just a drifter in the wind
I’m just a driven piece of shit
I’m just a drifter and I don’t know how I came to be here
I’m just a drifter in the wind
I’m just a driven man
And I don’t know how I came to be here
And I don’t know just how long I’ll be clear
And I wonder could your Spirit heal me
And I wonder could your Spirit use me
And I wonder could your Spirit move me
