I wrote this song at a cabin north of Winnipeg just a few months after seriously injuring my hand on a table saw. I brought my old soft-string guitar with me to see if I could make any chords, and this song came out. I was reading Psalm 18 at the time and reflecting on the deliverance of the Israelites from the slavery to Pharaoh. The chords of death, the slaver’s oppressive might, the snare, the trap-- then thick cloud and the fiery wall, the shaking of the earth and the opening of the waters... and finally, the Lord leads the captives out to a “spacious place.” I found these words so beautiful and so comforting... and so fitting that they would be the words that leapt into song through my mangled hand and halting, hesitant chords... Come see what God has done. It’s just a simple testimony.
lyrics
Caught in a well-laid net
Soldier’s boot on my neck
Lashes across my back
That’s when the ground was shaken
I ran to the water’s edge
Pressed by a fiery hedge
I came through the water’s depths
Into this land unending...
I’ve passed through the watery grave
I’ve passed through the fiery flame
I’ve passed through this widening plane
Into this very spacious place
I’ve been drowned and burned
Lately I’ve tossed and turned
Should there be lessons learned?
Should this be all forgotten?
Come see what God has done
Come see what God has done
Come see what God has done
Come see what God has done
Come see what God has done...
